Artisans d'Angkor

When you are interested in seeing and buying some beautiful hand carved statues you must pay a visit to Artisans d'Angkor. 

Carving and painting center

In Artisans d'Angkor you will find Les chantiers écoles which is a school specialised in teaching wood- and stone carving techniques. They also have a program that learns youngsters the skill of lacquer painting. The school was established in 1992 and has as purpose to train young people between the age of 18 and 25 and to help them to provide a living. Most of them come from poor families of the rural areas. They get a training of six months and after that they have another six months to refine their kills by working in one of the centers. 

You can visit the workshops and see the trainers carving the statues. One of the partners there will show you around and explain what the workers are doing. Don't hesitate to talk directly to them and to ask questions about their work. They are very friendly and willing to answer them.

Silk Farm

Artisans d'Angkor also has a silk farm which you can visit. During the tour you can see the whole process of producing fine silk. They start with explaining how to grow the mulberry trees, nurturing the worms, adding colour and weaving of the silk. Several workers will be making scarfs or other accessories of fine pure silk. This is a very patient and time consuming job but the result is amazing.

  • Located around 20 min out of Siem Reap town (16 km, follow road 6 to the airport and then follow the sign of the Silk Farm)
  • Free shuttle bus from Artisan d'Angkor at 9h30 and 13h30 
  • Entrance is free
  • Daily open from 8h00 to 17h00

Artisans d'Angkor Shop

There is also a shop at Artisans d'Angkor where you can buy the carved statues, paintings and silk. You will find clothes, cushions, scarfs and many other things made of the fine pure silk. Profits of the sold products go back into the school to give more youngsters the opportunity to follow the training course. 

You can also order the products online. You can even make a special request and ask them to make you a unique piece.
